2005 ND Ready Mix & Concrete Products Association Excellence in Concrete Award - 1/4/2006
Governmental Category Award Winner

Grand Forks Levee, Phase 2-Reeves Drive

"Flood protection facilities along the Red River in Grand Forks are certainly showcasing the capabilities of ready mix concrete. The 1063 l.f. Reeves Drive portion of the project was constructed for $1.032 million as part of a larger wall project of 4787 l.f. and $4.018 million construction cost. The floodwalls were designed with a strong horizontal element to minimixe the visual impact of their great height of 10 to 16 feet. The walls were constructed using Costom Rock brand form liners, and individual stones were stained to enhance color and aesthetics. Each neighborhood was tasked with choosing their own wall design.

Concrete construction was necessarily made difficult by winter construction. Water and aggregate for mixes was heated to meet stringent specs for mix temperature. High range water reducers were utilized to attain 6" slump mixes with low water/cement ratios. In spite of the rugged construction conditions, the project was finished and protection was secured for spring runnoff.

While the citizens of the river will lose their river scene-scape, it is apparent that the project planners have been able to trade some of the connection to the river with the wonderfully appointed structure in their backyards. Utility combined with aesthetics is certainly a strong-point of ready mixed concrete. Congratulations to the City and their citizens for this awards winning project."
